About the Originator

Dr. Jacob R. Mittleider, creator of the Mittleider Gardening Method, drew upon his extensive experience in the nursery business spanning two decades. Following his successful commercial venture, Mittleider embarked upon a global journey visiting orphanages and impoverished communities in 27 countries on six continents, instructing them in the efficient cultivation of food.

Through these interactions, Dr. Mittleider recognized that gardeners worldwide faced common challenges: namely, pests, diseases and plant malnutrition, with the latter greatly influencing the former two. As a result, he directed his efforts towards addressing plant nutrition and devised a methodology capable of growing food in any location, regardless of soil quality or climate.

ABOUT YOUR TEACHERS

Lucinda Bailey

Lucinda Bailey, CCA (aka, The Seed Lady) is a Certified Crop Advisor and Master Gardener specializing in the cultivation of heirloom vegetables from seed. Her interest in gardening began as a teenager in Michigan where she grew fresh, organic produce to sell to neighbors. Over the past ten years, Lucinda has crisscrossed the country conducting Mittleider workshops and lecturing on how to become food self-sufficient. Lucinda's greatest pleasure comes from leading Bible studies, tending her livestock and working the Texas Ready test gardens.

Kurt Nauck

Kurt Nauck is a Texas native and Wildlife Biology graduate from Texas A&M University. In 1984 he founded Wildlife on Wheels, an educational program now owned and operated by the Houston Museum of Natural Science. Kurt is also a Grammy nominee and proprietor of Nauck’s Vintage Records, the world's premier retailer of vintage sound recordings from the 1890s to the 1950s. Kurt (the bean counter), is happy to take a back seat to Lucinda (the bean planter) because at the end of the day, it's all about growing food, not posting receipts!
